Bright Futures

Building Bright Futures is a state program that offers tuition assistance for eligible families, based on income and child care need (e.g. parents work or go to school, etc.)

To check to see if your family is eligible, go to the Vermont DCF’s Bright Futures website and click the Child Care Benefits tab.

Public Pre-K Funding

Act 166 now mandates funding for 10 hours per week of universal pre-K for all preschool-aged children in Vermont in a prequalified program for 35 weeks in a school year.

Regardless of parental income or circumstance, children 3 years old on or before 9/1/24 are eligible to receive high-quality early learning experiences. For the 2024-25 school year, the Act 166 funding is equal to $3,764.00 per child.

SRMS is a prequalified program. Pre-K funding is paid directly to the school and is applied towards your tuition. To receive these funds, each family needs to submit a Public Pre-K registration form directly to their school district.

Parent Cooperative

From its inception in 1991 our non-profit school has been an organization governed by a parent body. When a child joins our school community, that child’s caregivers are granted a direct say in the operation of the school. Our collective Saxtons River Montessori School family–the children, teachers, community members, and parents–make SRMS the special and wonderful place that it is today.

The SRMS Board of Directors and staff meet at least once a month, and parents are encouraged to attend these meetings or have a board member represent their comments/concerns. Newsletters, email, the porch bulletin board, invitations, and board meetings are used to alert parents to school projects, needs, and events. Parents help organize and execute school fundraisers. Our main fundraising events are spread throughout the academic year. Due to the cooperative nature of the school, each family is expected to contribute wherever their talents and time allow throughout the school year.

With the active cooperation and participation of many parent volunteers, the school is able to: maintain and beautify the grounds and environment; teach a sense of community; utilize the unique talents and skills of its community members; minimize expenses and, thus, keep the cost of tuition down; and enhance the overall experience for our children.

Our Daily Routine

School begins each day on our playground. Preschool students greet their teachers, hang up their backpacks, and join their friends in active play. At 9AM we ring the bells and transition inside with a daily greeting song, to wash hands and gather for circle time. Throughout the morning, children move about freely and purposefully, working with materials from the various areas of the classroom, sharing a project with a friend, enjoying a story from our library, or offering friends a puppet show. The teachers circulate, as well, giving a lesson, problem solving with a child, listening to a story, or observing. Toward the end of the morning, the children return to the playground for outdoor learning and our half day students are picked up between 11:30AM and 12PM.

The Faculty & Staff

The Saxtons River Montessori School staff is comprised of experienced teachers, trained in the Montessori approach. They carefully plan the environment in the interests of the children, and facilitate classroom activity by helping children progress from one activity to the next. They are trained to guide the children individually, allowing them to choose from many activities within their range of ability. The guides stand back while the children are working and allow them the satisfaction of their own discovery.
